Workshop on E-waste recycling and pollution control in Guangdong Province, organized by Basel Convention Coordinating Centre for Asia and the Pacific (BCRC Beijing), and supported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection of China (MEP) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), was held on 13-14 September, 2012 in Shenzhen City, Guangdong province, China. The main goal of the workshop was to identify cross-sector priorities related to e-waste management, recycling, and reducing associated pollution in key areas in Guangdong province, China.
The workshop was attended totally by 25 participants from such as MEP, National Center of Solid Waste Management, MEP, Guangdong Solid Waste Management Center, Shantou Environmental Protection Bureau etc.úČinstitutionsúČuniversities and enterprises etc.
In the opening session, chaired by Mr. Li Jinhui, Executive Secretary of BCRC Beijing, Mr. Dai Xiang, Deputy Director from Department of Pollution Prevention and Control MEP made the opening remarks.
In this workshop, Mr. Dai Xiang from MEP, Mr. Huang Panxian from Guangdong Solid Waste Management Center, and other experts gave reports separately on the e-waste management, problem and challenges in China and the environmental management of e-waste recycling in Guangdong Province, the e-waste activities of StEP, e-waste industry development, the progress of the project on the development of the General Technical Specifications of Soil Remediation in Contaminated Sites etc. Ms. Liu Lili from BCRC Beijing gave a report on the results introduction of activities for promoting the management and recycle & treatment of e-Wastes.
Besides, the participants were divided into two groups to discuss the main problems related to e-waste in Guangdong province, the key issues facing the assessment and remediation of contaminated sites, the feasibility of carrying out a formal sector e-waste recycling demonstration, and the key issues of solving e-waste pollution in the Guiyu and Qingyuan areas of Guangdong province. During the discussion session, groups were charged with the following three tasks: 1) listing e-waste activities for capacity improvement; 2) defining the contents of the specific activities; 3) ranking the priorities of the activities. After the discussion, the participants summarized and developed the priorities of the activities, and part of the participants had a field visit to Huizhou Dongjiang Weiliya Environmental Services Co., Ltd., and Huizhou Dingchen industry Development Co., Ltd.
