In 1997, Basel Convention Coordinating Centre for Asia and the Pacific, abbreviated as BCRC China, was established on the basis of the China National Center for Hazardous Waste Management Training and Technology Transfer, which was established in June 26, 1993.
According to the Basel Convention, BCRC China’s role is to assist developing countries and countries with economies in transition, within Asia and the Pacific region, through capacity building for the environmentally sound management, to achieve the fulfillment of the objectives of the Convention. At present, BCRC China is one of the fourteen Basel Convention Regional and Coordinating Centers in the world, and is also one of the eight regional centres of Stockholm Convention since 2009.
Since it was established, BCRC China, as one national institution with regional role, has been working and achieved successful outcome in the fields of E-waste policy, management and recycling technology, hazardous waste management and recycling technology, transboundary movement of hazardous waste and other waste, debris waste management and other related issues at both national and regional level, through policy research, technology development and demonstration projects, capacity building activities and platform operation.
BCRC China is hosted by and located in Tsinghua University. Full-time staffs and parttime experts consist of its operation system. Prof. Jinhui LI, as executive secretary of BCRC China , is responsible for daily routine. The key technical experts include Prof. Gang Yu , Prof. HongtaoWang and Prof. Yongfeng Nie from Tsinghua University.
